When is the Letter of Intent Deadline?
The deadline for submitting a Letter of Intent is April 26, 2019 by 12 p.m. (noon). LOIs should be emailed to Amy Jo Jenkins at ajjenkins@uams.edu. Please include the required cover page when completing your LOI.
Are the Letters of Intent Binding?
Yes. Letters of Intent will be reviewed by a panel of senior UAMS faculty and staff to determine who will be invited to submit a full application.
When is the full application deadline?
The deadline for receipt of full applications is July 1, 2019 at 12 p.m. (noon). We anticipate that successful awardees will be notified on August 16, 2019.
What is the start date?
Projects are expected to start between October 1, 2019 and December 1, 2019. The official notice of award from TRI cannot be issued until the National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS) has reviewed and approved the project. We expect reviews to be completed in the fall and awardees to start their projects between October and December.
What materials are required for the NCATS review process?
Specifics on the materials neccessary for the NCATS review process will be determined based on the type and scope of the study being proposed. TRI staff will work with our recommended awardees to complete the review process. In general, though, information and documents related to your IRB and other regulatory approvals, human subjects research, enrollment, etc.
How do I submit my application?
Applications should be submitted through the TRI Pilot Grant System. If you have problems accessing or using the system, please contact Nia Indelicato by email: nlindelicato@uams.edu or phone: 526-0363. Application packets must be submitted as a single PDF. Applications are due by noon on June 24, 2019.

What is the deadline for submitting my project to the the IRB/IACUC for approval? What proof of submission do I need to show?
Projects must be submitted for all necessary regulatory approval(s) by the application deadline of noon on July 1, 2019. Proof of submission (screen shot or copy of submission confirmation) or a letter from each applicable regulatory agency granting exemption or approval must be included in your application packet.
Does my project need to be approved by the IRB/IACUC before the July 1 deadline?
No. Your project may still be under review by the IRB/IACUC. However, you will have to prove regulatory submission as detailed in the RFA.
What is the deadline for IRB/IACUC for approval? What documentation do I need to provide?
Proof of regulatory approval (or determination of nonhuman subject research from the IRB) must be submitted by email to Nia Indelicato by September 3, 2019. TRI will not open project accounts without an approval letter(s).
How do I set up the BERD and TRI Budget consultations?
TRI requires invited applicants to receive pre-submission consultations with both BERD and the TRI Budget Manager, Laura Wilson. Consultations for invited applicants should take place between May 6 and 17. You can request BERD consultations through the TRI portal. You can arrange your budget consultation by emailing Laura Wilson. To ensure timely arrangement of appointments, please indicate you are a TRI Pilot Grant Opportunity applicant when requesting your consultations. We also suggest starting the scheduling process ASAP after full invitation on May 1.
Does TRI provide help/guidance for the lay videos?
TRI does provide some limited help and guidance for the lay video process. Invited applicants will be provided with more specific instructions for the videos which outlines the goals of the videos and provides tips on what to cover. TRI can also help connect you with campus resources to help you shoot and/or edit your video. Video do not need to have high production values or be shot with high-grade equipment. Focus should be put into clearly communicating your project to a broad audience in a way that is easy to understand and makes clear the importance of your proposal.
Is research using animals allowed?
Yes, the Health Challenges of Rural and Underrepresented Populations RFA is not restricted to human trials or research, studies using animals are allowed.
