Application to Access Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) Data

In order to gain access to the HUCP data, researchers (including graduate assistants) must agree to the conditions and training requirements outlined below.

TRI Acknowledgment

Users must acknowledge support in any presentations, publications, or other disseminations of the research that utilized the TRI data resources. Suggested language.

Security Requirements

  • Do not disclose or lend your user ID and/or password to someone else. They are for your use only and serve as your “electronic signature.” This means that you may be held responsible for the consequences of unauthorized or illegal transactions.
  • Do not browse or use TRI data files for unauthorized or illegal purposes.
  • Do not use TRI data files for private gain or to misrepresent yourself.
  • Do not make any disclosure of TRI data that is not specifically authorized.
  • Do not duplicate TRI data files, create sub-files of such records, remove or transmit data unless you have been specifically authorized to do so.
  • Do not change, delete, or otherwise alter TRI files unless you have been specifically authorized to do so.
  • Do not make copies of data files, with identifiable data or data that would allow individual identities to be deduced unless you have been specifically authorized to do so.
  • Do not intentionally cause corruption or disruption of TRI data files.

Training and Documentation Requirements

  1. Complete the HCUP Data Use Agreement Training.
  2. Review and sign the Data Use Agreement for the Nationwide Databases from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
  3. Complete Human Subjects Protection Training through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program. You may choose to complete either the Biomedical Research course or the Social and Behavioral Research course. For those choosing the Social and Behavioral Research course, the optional modules on Records Based Research must also be completed.
  4. If the proposed project is funded by an intramural award, please submit a copy of the award notification.

By signing this agreement, the user agrees to the conditions outlined above. A violation of these requirements may result in termination of the system’s access privileges.
