The Digital Microscopy Core operates and maintains computer controlled microscope workstations ranging from light to electron microscopy. In addition, we provide advice, training and user support for equipment operation and sample preparation.
Overview of Core Services
- Zeiss LSM 510 Meta microscope: laser scanning confocal light microscope for fluorescence and differential interference contrast microscopy
- Zeiss AxioImager microscope: upright microscope equipped for wide field differential interference contrast, polarized light and fluorescence microscopy, two cameras (color and cooled black and white camera for sensitive fluorescence work, Zeiss software)
- Zeiss Axiovert S100TV microscope: inverted microscope configured with stage heater for time-lapse studies
- FEI Tecnai F20 200 keV microscope: electron microscope with field emission gun and 4 K FEI Eagle camera. Microscope is controlled by either FEI software or SerialEM software from the Boulder 3D EM laboratory.
Sample Preparation Equipment
- Leica Automated Freeze Substitution apparatus for electron microscope sample preparation
- Leica Ultracut 7 microtome with cryo-attachment for sectioning plastic embedded and/or frozen samples for electron microscopy
Leica glass knife maker for use with microtome
- FEI Vitrobot for microprocessor controlled plunge freezing of samples for electron microscopy
- Availability: The Digital Microscopy Core is a shared research facility available to all investigators in the state of Arkansas. The facility is accessible to trained users 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Technical assistance is available 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday with advance notice.
- Scheduling: Equipment may be reserved by contacting the core director. Priority for reserving the microscopes is given to BRIN/INBRE students and the six laboratories known as “SIG” users. Other users may reserve instruments on a first come, first serve basis when priority users are not scheduled.
- Fees: If a user fails to arrive or call within 20 minutes of their scheduled reservation, the time may be forfeited to another user and charges may apply.
- Acknowledgement: All users agree to acknowledge use of the Digital Microscopy Core in scholarly work and to provide a copy of published work.
